Community Orchard

HKD members young and old helped plant the first fruit trees for the new Age Concern Community Orchard in Hassocks. The trees included Sussex varieties of apple and plum.
The scheme is a joint venture between HKD, Peter May of Fruit Futures, a project run by the Brighton Permaculture Trust and Action in Rural Sussex. Among those helping plant the young trees were scouts from the 7th Burgess Hill troop. See how the story made the Mid Sussex Times.
Luncinda Hawkes of HKD said local beekeeper Philip O'Connell would place a beehive on the site to pollinate the trees.
‘We're keen to get more people involved in return for sharing the produce,” she added.
If you would like to help with the next phase of planting raspberries and rhubarb for the orchard please JLIB_HTML_CLOAKING  and let her know which Saturdays you can help. As well as planting, help is also needed to saw the tops off the posts supporting the baby trees to prevent them getting in the way of the growth of the lower branches.
Planting dates are: Saturday 25 February and 3, 10 or 17 March from 10am. At the most it will take 2 - 3 hours depending on numbers. Come for as long as you can.

Market for Hurst to launch this spring

Agreement has finally been reached to hold a regular market in Hurstpierpoint, starting on Saturday April 7.

Thanks to the continuing hard work of HKD’s Sarah Furey and Kate O’Sullivan (of  Hassocks Market), it is hoped that the market - to be called First in Hurst - will be held monthly on Saturdays at the Club suite in Hurst Village Centre. Watch this space for more details soon and see below for more good news about villagers in Sayers Common, who will hopefully see their own community shop open.

Sayers Common community shop set to open

A community shop for Sayers Common is due to open this year.A public meeting and village survey last year revealed overwhelming support for the setting up of a community shop - a venture achieved successfully in over 250 communities in the UK.Volunteers are working to open the shop as soon as possible. Based on feedback from the initial questionnaire volunteers for the shop are very keen to provide a social hub within the village and can see many opportunities ahead to engage with all residents of the village, local businesses as well as visitors.

It is planned to sell fresh milk and other dairy, fresh bread and bakery products, newspapers, local produce, fresh fruit and veg, sweets and ice cream, greeting cards/wrapping, homemade cakes, beer, wine, spirits, tinned, packet groceries, toiletries, household/cleaning goods, stationery, pet food, cigarettes/tobacco, meat, frozen food, ready meals, craft and gift items. It’s also hoped to offer a tea, coffee area, sandwiches and hot lunches, a postal services, advertising/local events board, prescription collection, internet and dry cleaning collection. Organisers are looking for local producers and individuals to help stock the shop. Do you have a skill that might benefit you and the shop? If you grow, or make, for instance, home made cakes, fruit and veg, greetings cards and gifts they would love to hear.

Or why not add your name to the list of people who have volunteered their time to help in the shop? Volunteers for a variety of roles are needed. Please register your interest and email  JLIB_HTML_CLOAKING . More details about the shop are available at the community shop website.
