Hurst's First Market gets off to a flying start

Easter Saturday saw the first fantastic First in Hurst with the new market opening for business at the Village Centre. Thanks to the continuing hard work of HKD’s Sarah Furey and Kate O’Sullivan (of Hassocks Market), it is hoped that the market will be held monthly on Saturdays. The next market is on June 2 at the Village Centre from 9am-1pm.

The market, which saw brisk business with lots of local interest, is the culmination of years’ of hard work to see a local forum based on the principles of Transition. These are:

* Traders will be based within a 20 mile radius of Hurst (as far as possible).
* Vegetables and fruit will be organic or unsprayed
* Meat, dairy and eggs will be from free-range animals, no battery farming.
* Processed products should contain as significant proportion of local produce.
* Traders will minimise packaging for their goods, and customers will be encouraged to re-use bags, recycle and reduce waste.
* The market will work to encourage and skill-up local producers.
* Community groups will be promoted and the market will aim to support the village as a whole, including local shops and traders, crafts and skills.
* The market will provide a venue for information and education about Transition, about local food and growing, energy conservation and alternatives and sustainable transport.

HKD was busy at the market. As well as handing out free compostable goodie bags members were on hand to talk about Transition and hand out copies of our free Local Food Directory.

BEE-Cause

British bees are vital to our food supply and economy. But their numbers have declined dramatically. That’s why Friends of the Earth has launched The Bee Cause so that together we can help save British bees. By sowing wildflower seeds in your garden, allotment, window boxes or plant pots, you'll provide bees with a much-needed food source. Changes to town planning, farming and our use of pesticides could prevent even more bee species from becoming extinct. Sign the petition for a Bee Action Plan here.
