WHAT IS TRANSITION ABOUT?
The Transition Network links together the 949 (at last count) Transition groups that are active around the world in local responses to climate change and the end of the era of cheap oil.
Transition groups typically start with awareness-raising in their communities, then go on to start a wide variety of local projects that work on whatever the key issues and opportunities are locally.
• Many work on food projects – encouraging people to grow their own, supporting local food producers, even starting community-owned agriculture schemes.
• Others work on transport – making it easier for people to leave their cars at home and walk, cycle and use public transport.
• Transition groups are working on energy too – helping people make their homes more energy efficient, turn to renewable power and create community-owned renewable schemes.
• A wide variety of other activities and projects are springing up, focusing on education, health and well-being, local economies and other areas.
Much more information about Transition, the ideas, the approach and the initiatives are on the Transition Network website.
In East and West Sussex there are now 9 Transition groups. Transition Town Lewes is one of the oldest, being the second Transition Town to be started after Totnes initiated the movement. It is still very active and trend-setting. For more information see http://www.transitiontownlewes.org/
