ABOUT US
The villages of Hassocks, Hurstpierpoint, Keymer and Ditching are linked together in many ways, despite being divided by the boundary between East and West Sussex. We are linked by
-
- transport routes (Hassocks station is an important link for all of us, some bus services link the three villages and the main north-south bus route is through Hassocks)
- shopping (from Hassocks village shops and Farmers Market on the one end and Ditchling's deli and tea shop at the other)
- schools (the secondary school in Hassocks serves all our villages) and community activities.
The combined population of the four villages is around 15,000. We are lucky to live in an area of beautiful countryside, with many miles of footpaths, woods, fields and the chalk Downs. We are even more lucky to have strong and flourishing communities with many active organisations involved in all sorts of interests. Ditchling has a strong cultural and artistic heritage that continues today.
Our Transition to a more sustainable future can only happen through involvement of many residents and their organisations. It will also need the active support of local governments, including the three parish councils (Hurstpierpoint & Sayers Common, Hassocks and Ditchling), two district councils (Mid-Sussex and Lewes) and the two county councils (West and East Sussex). HKD Transition is seeking partnerships with others who care about the issues of climate change and sustainability.
We are one of the 949 Transition initiatives around the world (370 of them in the UK) and we learn much from the creative activities of other groups.
